Keen succeeded in creating a model which can be used to understand the nature of the DSS development process. The key argument of Keen’s adaptive model for DSS is that the term DSS is relevant to situations where a “final” system can be developed only through an adaptive process of learning and evolution. The design strategy must then focus on getting furnished. The research issue for DSS centre around adaptation and evolution, they include meaning learning representation of tasks and user behaviour, design architecture and strategies for getting started. Development of DSS facilitates the learning process.

The Keen’s model explains that the benefits of using a DSS are increased learning, insight and ability to communicate through the interactive relationship among user, builder and system.

Monash DSS methodology takes in Keen’s model of adaptive DSS throughout its development. The adaptive process of leaning and evolution takes place at the system analysis and system delivery modules of the DSS development process. Monash DSS consists of five phases; planning & resourcing, design diagnoses, design, system construction and system use. Those phases are all interrelated involving interaction of user and builder for the development process. As it had suggested by Keen that the DSS shapes the users and users shapes the DSS, the “final” system (there is no absolute final since it keeps evolving) emerges through an adaptive process of design and usage.
